Consequences of strikes on telecom facilities

Russian aggression has caused damage to the critical infrastructure of mobile operator Kyivstar. As company president Oleksandr Komarov stated, two data centres were damaged as a result of the attacks.

“Один дата-центр повністю вимкнений. Щодо другого ми активно займаємося мітигацією ризиків” (One data centre is completely shut down. As for the second, we are actively working on risk mitigation), Komarov said.

Scale of losses sustained

According to the operator’s management, the telecom infrastructure suffered eight strikes over the past ten days. Attacks on logistics facilities posed a particular threat.

“На наш центральний склад прилетіло дві ракети” (Two missiles hit our central warehouse), he added.

Contingency plans and recovery

Oleksandr Komarov emphasised that the company had prepared in advance for the possible destruction of its infrastructure. To ensure operational resilience, Kyivstar reduced its standard equipment stock from $30 million to $15 million, focusing on critically important components.

Thanks to the availability of reserve equipment, the operator managed to restore the functionality of one of the damaged data centres. Work to revive the second facility is ongoing.
