Brussels demands Caribbean states close citizenship-by-investment schemes by 2028

The European Union has forced Caribbean states to choose between two options. The bloc is demanding the termination of programmes granting citizenship in exchange for investment by the summer of 2028.

Risk of losing visa-free access

If Brussels’ demands are not met, countries risk losing their right to visa-free entry into Europe. Decisions on the future of these programmes must be made by 12 November.

EU pressure is directed at countries in the Caribbean basin that offer foreigners citizenship in return for investment. Brussels insists on the closure of such schemes within the specified deadlines.

Antigua and Barbuda’s reaction

The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda has already stated his position. He noted that he leans towards maintaining the visa-free regime with the Schengen area rather than continuing the investment programmes.
