Recently, the public sphere has been discussing the hypothesis that the choice of dates for mass missile and drone attacks on Ukraine may correlate with the phases of the Moon. Military expert Oleg Zhdanov drew attention to the fact that during the period from October 2025 to 27 October 2026, large-scale strikes by the Russian Federation fell on the days of the full Moon.
Observations by a military expert
According to Oleg Zhdanov, although there is no scientific explanation for such a coincidence, the statistical pattern deserves attention. The expert suggested that the Russian military leadership may be guided by these astronomical dates when planning operations.
The issue became particularly acute on 26 October, when Zhdanov expressed concern about the possibility of another shelling. The following night, the Russian armed forces did indeed attack Ukrainian territory. At the same time, the expert emphasised that he is not a supporter of conspiracy theories, but acknowledges that the recorded coincidences are unusual.
It is important to note that the published data do not constitute a full statistical study. To confirm the hypothesis, it is necessary to analyse all attack dates, determine the criteria for their scale, and take into account other operational factors. Moreover, the Russian army carries out shelling on days that do not coincide with the full moon, so the presence of coincidences does not prove a direct influence of the Moon on command decisions.
Hypothesis about the influence of mystical beliefs
Researcher of mystical teachings Igor Mekheda believes that the coincidence of dates may not be accidental. He explains that in some spiritual traditions, the full Moon is endowed with special symbolic significance. Mekheda suggests that representatives of the Kremlin leadership may theoretically be guided by similar notions, and the Russian dictator may perceive his own actions through the prism of mystical beliefs.
The researcher drew a historical parallel with Nazi Germany, mentioning the "Ahnenerbe" organisation, which studied mythology and pseudoscientific theories for the ideological purposes of the Third Reich. Mekheda claims that similar notions about the mystical justification of political decisions may be close to part of the modern Russian elite. He suggests that the Kremlin may be trying to combine military actions with symbolic dates, such as the full moon, new moon, or eclipses.
Previous statements about interest in shamanism
Information about the Russian dictator's fascination with mystical rituals has appeared in the media space before. Former deputy of the Russian State Duma Maria Maksakova spoke about the alleged participation of the Russian leader and former Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu in shamanic rituals. Similar claims were made by Russian political scientist Valery Solovey, who claimed that before the full-scale invasion, Putin consulted with shamans.
However, none of these statements were confirmed by independent evidence. Currently, there are no verified facts that shamans or other adherents of occult practices directly influence the determination of missile strike dates. Therefore, such claims should be regarded as unconfirmed statements by individual public figures.
Ethnographic context and caveats
Ethnography researcher Yuri Dakhno explained that in folk beliefs, the full Moon has been associated with supernatural phenomena, the activation of mythical creatures, and unclean forces for centuries. These superstitions were reflected in fairy tales and legends. Dakhno does not rule out that Putin may have an interest in occultism, but emphasises that folk legends have no scientific basis, and their connection with modern military decisions remains only a supposition.
Researchers warn against attempts to predict specific dates of future attacks solely based on the lunar calendar. Even if some previous strikes fell on the full moon, this does not guarantee that future large-scale attacks will take place during this period. The planning of shelling depends on many factors: the availability of missiles and drones, the readiness of strike assets, operational tasks, and military-political decisions. Occupiers regularly attack Ukrainian cities on days that have no relation to astronomical events.
