Court approves plea deal with former presidential adviser

The Higher Anti-Corruption Court (HAC) has issued a ruling regarding former Office of the President adviser Artem Shilo. The judge approved a plea deal with the defendant in the case concerning the illegal appropriation of funds from the state company "Ukrzaliznytsia".

According to the court's decision, Shilo was found guilty of organising the appropriation of another person's property on an especially large scale and the laundering of proceeds obtained through criminal activity. Specifically, the plea deal concerns the episode involving the operation of a so-called "back office", through which, according to the investigation, funds were siphoned off from "Ukrzaliznytsia".

Punishment and release conditions

The court sentenced Artem Shilo to eight years of imprisonment. However, in accordance with the terms of the plea deal, he was released from serving the actual prison term. Instead, he was given a probation period of three years.

The financial obligations include the payment of a fine of 204 million hryvnia. The court allowed this payment to be deferred over one year: the funds must be paid in four quarterly instalments of 51 million hryvnia each.

Asset confiscation and restrictions on rights

In addition to the fine, the court applied special confiscation in the amount of 325.7 million hryvnia. Real estate assets were also subject to special confiscation: three apartments, including one with an area of 183.5 square metres and two of 102.3 square metres each.

Meanwhile, the court authorities lifted the seizure of the defendant's personal Mercedes-Benz car.

Additionally, Artem Shilo is prohibited from holding positions involving organisational, administrative or managerial powers in military formations and law enforcement agencies for three years.
