Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko emphasised the technical impossibility of fully supplying the capital with electricity using autonomous generator units. He stated this in a comment to Suspilne.
Economic unfeasibility of mass generator use
According to the mayor, Kyiv's total electricity demand is 2 gigawatts. Meeting such a large-scale request solely with generators is unrealistic. In addition to technical limitations, such equipment requires continuous maintenance and regular technical shutdowns, as well as enormous fuel costs.
“Let’s be frank: taking fuel prices into account, the electricity they produce turns out to be ‘golden’,” Klitschko noted, highlighting the high cost of energy produced in this way.
Status of critical infrastructure supply
Meanwhile, the mayor added that some critically important facilities already have backup power. Specifically, Kyiv’s sewage system is currently fully supplied by generators. The next step will be installing similar equipment at water intake facilities.
Previously, Volodymyr Zelensky reported that the electricity supply situation in Kyiv is the most difficult among all cities in Ukraine.
