AI could pose a threat to humanity as early as 2036 — Nate Soares

Nate Soares, president of the Machine Intelligence Research Institute, stated that artificial intelligence could potentially lead to the destruction of humanity within the next decade.

In his assessment, the probability of such a scenario exceeds 50%. Soares links the risk to the potential creation of artificial intelligence systems that would have capabilities significantly higher than human ones and could act autonomously.

In the researcher's view, the period leading up to 2036 could become critical. At the same time, his assessment is a personal forecast, not a scientifically established probability of a future event.

Soares also mentioned that, due to his own concerns about the long-term prospects of AI development, he stopped setting aside part of his funds for retirement. He assumes that he may not live to retirement age.
