Criticism of the deal with the Kremlin
The decision by US President Donald Trump to agree with dictator Vladimir Putin on the supply of Russian diesel fuel triggered a wave of criticism from a number of Republicans in both chambers of Congress.
Senator John Kennedy's position
Senator John Kennedy called the leader a "м'ясником" (butcher) who kills both his own citizens and Ukrainians. In addition, he emphasised that Putin will never become a friend of the US.
At the same time, the senator acknowledged that Trump is trying to lower diesel fuel prices by all available means. However, in his opinion, a real step towards cheaper fuel would be the end of the war in Iran.
Michael McCaul's concern
Former chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Michael McCaul also expressed concern over the possible easing of sanctions on Russian fuel. He believes that this will only increase the Kremlin's financial resources for waging war and will contribute to further violence and destruction.
Lisa Murkowski's appeal
Against the backdrop of recent events, Senator Lisa Murkowski called on Trump to use his existing authorities instead of allowing Russia to export diesel fuel, profit from it, and continue the war against Ukraine.
She noted that the issue of Russia's return to global energy markets could be considered after the end of the war. For now, in her words, it is necessary to cut off all sources of funding for the Russian war machine.
