Launch of the first joint satellite by Rheinmetall and Argotec
On 1 October, German arms giant Rheinmetall, together with its Italian subsidiary Argotec, successfully placed its first reconnaissance satellite into Earth orbit. This event was the result of joint development by both companies.
The launch was carried out using a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, which lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, USA.
Strategic significance of the launch for defence
Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger emphasised the importance of this event for national security. “The successful launch of our first satellite marks an important milestone in strengthening national security and space capabilities. Integrating space data into existing defence architectures is a critical step in addressing challenges in the changing security environment,” he stated.
Satellite functionality and data processing technologies
The primary mission of the new space asset is monitoring airspace. The satellite’s sensors are capable of detecting signs of potential air threats, enabling early warning and providing necessary data for air defence systems.
The obtained situational awareness information and satellite imagery will be processed using artificial intelligence technologies. The system integrates space surveillance with ground nodes and tactical networks, which will be managed through a centralised command centre.
Plans to expand the satellite fleet Argotec CEO David Avino stated: “Together with Rheinmetall, we are turning space technologies into a valuable operational asset – scalable, networked and ready to support complex defence scenarios.” Through its subsidiary Rheinmetall Italia S.p.A., the company will begin targeted development of an independent satellite constellation for military needs. Based on this initial space presence, a gradual expansion to a full-fledged satellite constellation is planned.
