Rubio: US to independently assess threats to embassy in Kyiv

Washington rejects the scenario of an automatic response to Russian recommendations regarding the departure of foreign diplomats from the Ukrainian capital.

Decision to depend on own analysis

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasised that the United States will independently determine the level of threat to its diplomats. It is on the basis of this internal assessment of the security situation that the final decision on the possible evacuation of the American embassy will be made.

According to Rubio, Russia has been insisting for several months that foreign diplomats leave Kyiv. However, the American side does not intend to follow these recommendations directly.

Comment on attacks on the capital

«Вони попереджають дипломатів про необхідність покинути місто вже кілька місяців, і я не думаю, що для когось буде сюрпризом, що Київ зазнає атак» (They have been warning diplomats about the need to leave the city for several months, and I do not think it will be a surprise to anyone that Kyiv will suffer attacks), the US Secretary of State noted.

Thus, official Washington confirmed that it will assess the security of its mission in Ukraine and make decisions based on this assessment.
