Preparing for defence deployment

The Swedish military is preparing to deploy Patriot missile defence systems in eastern Poland. The primary objective of this mission is to ensure the security of the NATO logistics centre through which allies deliver weapons to Ukraine.

Operation details

The active phase of the operation is scheduled to begin in December. Approximately 100 personnel from the Swedish air defence unit based in Halmstad will be involved in carrying out the tasks.

Government position

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson explained the strategic significance of these actions. He emphasised that the main purpose of both the deployment of Gripen jets and the installation of Patriot systems is to protect the NATO logistics centre located at a Polish airport.

However, the head of the Swedish government did not disclose the exact number of air defence systems planned for transfer to Poland.
