Start of first trilateral manoeuvres
For the first time in history, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Uzbekistan have held joint military exercises named 'Power of Unity - 2026'. The main part of the manoeuvres took place in the Khojaly district of the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan. In total, over 3,500 servicemen from the three participating countries took part in the drills. Some other states, including Iran, observed the progress of the exercises in the status of observers.
Tactical tasks and technical support
Military personnel practised complex scenarios aimed at countering mass drone attacks, cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns, border incidents and attempts to seize a vessel. A significant amount of equipment was deployed at the Kizilkaya training ground: over 130 unmanned systems, more than 70 armoured vehicles, over 90 artillery systems and more than 20 units of aviation equipment.
The exercise programme provided for the combined use of unmanned complexes, artillery, armoured vehicles, aviation and radio-electronic warfare means. Certain episodes were dedicated to breaking through defensive positions and anti-tank ditches, demining and advancing armoured vehicles. The military also trained in detecting and stopping attempts to cross the border using drones, conducting combat operations against hypothetical terrorist positions in mountainous terrain, clearing populated areas and establishing checkpoints.
Maritime phase and geography of the manoeuvres
In addition to the land training ground, the exercises were held at sites in Baku, the Karabakh region, Nakhchivan and in the Azerbaijani part of the Caspian Sea. The maritime phase included the liberation of a vessel and a maritime object, the rescue of hostages and the landing of a landing force to neutralise a hypothetical terrorist base.
Statements by leadership and further meetings
Azerbaijan's Minister of Defence, Colonel-General Zakir Gasanov, noted that the manoeuvres covered land, maritime and air operations. Following the completion of the exercises, the 13th trilateral meeting of the Ministers of Defence of Azerbaijan, Turkey and Georgia was held in Shusha, dedicated to issues of military cooperation, regional security and trilateral relations.
