Former head of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) August Hanning has been taken into custody in Germany. He is charged with receiving confidential data for a reward and potentially passing this information to foreign intelligence services.
Circumstances of the case
According to the investigation, after his resignation in 2005, Hanning received payments from his former chief of staff for secret information over several years. Authorities are currently determining whether this information could have reached foreign states.
Investigators also note that Hanning prepared an analysis of the security situation for a foreign intelligence service on at least one occasion, using the secret data he had obtained. His contacts with a foreign agent have also been established.
Search results
Hanning was already searched in September last year as part of a separate investigation. At that time, investigators were examining a possible link between a private security company associated with the former BND chief and a failed child abduction attempt in 2022.
During the search, an electronic storage device was seized, on which thousands of secret documents were found. Law enforcement officers examined them for several months. A year later, when Hanning was 80 years old, they arrived with an arrest warrant.
Other detainees
At the same time as Hanning, his former chief of staff and the latter’s successor were taken into custody. The latter is suspected of selling secret information, including documents related to the Iranian nuclear programme and the Russian armed forces.
