Decision on transferring remains
In the city of Podilsk in Odesa Oblast, local authorities are preparing a decision regarding the reinterment of Grigory Kotovsky. His remains are planned to be moved from a mausoleum located in the city centre to a cemetery.
This was reported by the organisation "Decolonisation of Ukraine" in its Facebook account.
«У місті Подільськ, що на Одещині, місцева влада готує рішення про перепоховання Котовського з мавзолею на кладовище. Цей процес ми намагалися рухати майже 10 років» (In the city of Podilsk in Odesa Oblast, local authorities are preparing a decision to reinter Kotovsky from the mausoleum to the cemetery. We have been trying to move this process forward for almost 10 years), the published statement reads.
Monument status
Previously, representatives of the organisation noted that Kotovsky's tomb-mausoleum had been removed from the State Register of Immovable Cultural Heritage of Ukraine by a corresponding decision of the Ministry of Culture.
History of the mausoleum
The discussion concerns the burial site of Soviet military figure Grigory Kotovsky. The structure is located in Taras Shevchenko City Park, near the Podilsk railway station (formerly Kotovsk).
The mausoleum was laid on 7 August 1925 following Kotovsky's assassination. The monumental building was opened in 1934. On 6 August 1941, during the Romanian-German occupation, the mausoleum was destroyed. However, local residents and depot workers hid the remains of the body.
In December 1965, the structure was restored, albeit in a smaller form.
