Hitler's residence "Eagle's Nest" catches fire in Germany: police detain suspect in arson
A fire broke out at the Kehlsteinhaus building, known as the "Eagle's Nest", in the Bavarian Alps. According to preliminary findings, the cause of the blaze may have been arson. Police have detained a man suspected of involvement in the incident.
The fire started late at night. By the time emergency services arrived, the flames had spread to almost the entire building.
Police reported that officers encountered a motorcyclist on their way to the scene. The man aroused suspicion among the officers, leading to his detention. Investigative actions are currently being conducted with him to establish the circumstances of the incident.
The "Eagle's Nest", or Kehlsteinhaus, is located in the Bavarian Alps on Mount Kehlstein at an altitude of approximately 1,834 metres above sea level.
The building was constructed in 1937–1938 at the initiative of Martin Bormann. Kehlsteinhaus was planned as a gift to Adolf Hitler for his 50th birthday.
The site is located near Hitler's former residence, the Berghof, which was destroyed at the end of the Second World War.
Kehlsteinhaus itself is a small building, originally used as a tea house. It is now open to tourists. A restaurant and an observation deck with views of the surrounding mountains operate on the premises.
