Escalation threat by 2030

UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting shared an assessment of the security situation, noting that by 2030, potential adversaries may acquire the capability to attack British territory. In a column for The Telegraph, he emphasised that there is just over 1,000 days left to prepare for a possible armed conflict.

Criticism of previous government and state of the army

Streeting directly accused the Conservative Party, which governed the country from 2010 to 2024, of weakening the armed forces. According to him, as a result of the previous government's policies, the United Kingdom is left with its smallest army since the Napoleonic Wars.

The minister stressed that his top priority is ensuring the state's combat readiness. He warned that threats to Britain extend beyond classical warfare, including terrorism, sabotage, and other hostile actions capable of disrupting citizens' daily lives and threatening their safety.

«Найсерйозніші небезпеки ХХ століття повертаються, озброєні технологіями ХХІ століття» ("The most serious dangers of the 20th century are returning, armed with 21st-century technologies"), Streeting emphasised.

Defence spending targets and alliance

Meanwhile, the head of the Ministry of Defence expressed confidence that the current cabinet of ministers would achieve the established target for defence spending within NATO. In his assessment, by 2030, the size of the armed forces and military economies of potential adversaries could enable them to strike Britain.

«Це залишає нам трохи більш як 1000 днів, щоб виконати нашу місію: бути готовими разом із нашими союзниками до бою та перемоги» ("This leaves us with just over 1,000 days to fulfil our mission: to be ready, together with our allies, for battle and victory"), Wes Streeting concluded.
