President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed confidence that the shift in the balance of power in the US in favour of the Democratic Party following the midterms will have a positive impact on the volume of aid to Ukraine. According to the leader, this applies to both financial resources and the supply of weapons.
The Ukrainian head of state emphasised that a stronger position for Washington could influence the actions of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
Zelensky noted that the Democrats openly declare their support for Ukraine and strive to restore closer relations between the United States and Europe. At the same time, the president thanked the Republicans, who continue to support Kyiv.
«Я також вдячний республіканцям, але демократи дуже чітко говорять про підтримку України та надання їй допомоги. Вони говорять про відновлення зв’язків між Сполученими Штатами та Європою. Тому є надія, що виникне баланс сил і ми отримаємо більшу підтримку» (I am also grateful to the Republicans, but the Democrats are speaking very clearly about supporting Ukraine and providing it with assistance. They are talking about restoring ties between the United States and Europe. Therefore, there is hope that a balance of power will emerge and we will receive greater support), said Zelensky.
The president's expectations are linked to the results of the midterms in the US. According to the results, the Democrats will have control over both chambers of Congress from 2027.
According to Zelensky, if the US legislative body begins to advocate for large-scale financial and military aid to Ukraine, this will become an additional factor of pressure on Moscow.
«Якщо Конгрес зараз говоритиме про потужну фінансову підтримку чи військову допомогу, як це сьогодні робить і демонструє Європа, то це буде щось позитивне, що вплине на Путіна» (If Congress now speaks of strong financial support or military assistance, as Europe is doing and demonstrating today, then this will be something positive that will influence Putin), the Ukrainian leader emphasised.
