Allegations of bias
Serbia's acting president, Ana Brnabic, expressed dissatisfaction with the composition of the European Parliament delegation tasked with monitoring the parliamentary elections scheduled for Sunday. In a letter sent on Tuesday to the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, Brnabic accused several members of the mission, which will be in the country from 22 to 26 October, of political bias.
«Вибір осіб, які постійно висловлюють вкрай негативні думки про владу Сербії, а деякі з них публічно закликали до її відставки та висловлювали підтримку іншим учасникам виборів, явно вказує на те, що вони приїжджають до Сербії з уже сформованими висновками» (The choice of individuals who constantly express extremely negative opinions about the Serbian government, some of whom have publicly called for its resignation and expressed support for other election participants, clearly indicates that they are coming to Serbia with already formed conclusions), Brnabic emphasised in her address.
Reaction to the mission head
Particular attention in Brnabic's criticism was given to MEP Andreas Schieder, who will head the observation mission. The acting president had previously expressed dissatisfaction with Schieder's actions, a member of the Austrian Social Democratic Party (SPÖ), a left-centre party, claiming that this MEP "states daily that Aleksandar Vucic must leave office".
Responding to Brnabic's letter on Tuesday, Schieder told the Austrian news agency APA that this is an "unprecedented attack on the European Parliament's election observation mission".
Position of other observers and the opposition
Another member of the delegation, Helmut Brandstätter, stated that he would continue to focus on ensuring the integrity of the vote. «Як досвідчений спостерігач за виборами, я не буду відволікатися на вигуки і цього разу зосереджуся на тому, чи є вибори вільними та справедливими» (As an experienced election observer, I will not be distracted by outbursts and this time I will focus on whether the elections are free and fair), Brandstätter noted.
Dragan Djilas, leader of the opposition pro-European coalition "European Serbia", accused Brnabic of attempting to discredit the EP observers before their arrival in the country.
«Замість того, щоб гарантувати, що кожен громадянин зможе вільно проголосувати, ви нападаєте на Андреаса Шідера лише тому, що, Боже мій, як політик, він зробив політичні заяви» (Instead of ensuring that every citizen can vote freely, you are attacking Andreas Schieder simply because, my God, as a politician, he made political statements), Djilas said.
The total number of delegation members is seven. It includes MEPs representing six political groups and five different countries.
