Democratic members of the US House Judiciary Committee have officially demanded the appointment of a special prosecutor. The special prosecutor's task is to investigate possible links between President Donald Trump and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The report was published on Monday, 26 October. According to data provided by Democrats, 11 women linked Trump to Epstein's criminal activities. The document contains information that five of them directly accused Trump of committing rape or sexual violence, with these incidents occurring in the presence of Epstein or in his company.
According to the authors of the report, the special prosecutor's powers should cover not only the verification of possible actions by Trump himself, but also the investigation of the activities of all Epstein's accomplices with the aim of bringing them to criminal responsibility.
A separate section of the document is devoted to critical remarks addressed to Attorney General Todd Blanche. Democrats accuse him of concealing evidence against the president.
«Замість того щоб домагатися справедливості для постраждалих від Епштейна, колишня генпрокурорка Пем Бонді і генпрокурор Бланш керують Мін’юстом як приватною юридичною фірмою, що захищає свого колишнього клієнта» (Instead of seeking justice for Epstein's victims, former Attorney General Pam Bondi and Attorney General Blanche are running the Department of Justice like a private law firm protecting their former client), the report states. It is worth noting that before his appointment to the post, Blanche worked as Trump's personal lawyer.
Leading Democrat on the committee, Jamie Raskin, stated:
«Дональд Трамп каже, що знав Джеффрі Епштейна, "як і всі в Палм-Біч". Не зовсім так. Докази щодо 11 жінок розповідають зовсім іншу і значно серйознішу історію» (Donald Trump says he knew Jeffrey Epstein, "like everyone in Palm Beach". Not quite. The evidence regarding 11 women tells a completely different and much more serious story).
Donald Trump has consistently denied any involvement in Epstein's crimes. The president claims that there was no friendly relationship between them, that he never visited Epstein's private island and did not use his plane.
White House spokesperson Lauren Bess called the accusations untrue. In her opinion, this "report" is a desperate attempt by "crazy Democrats" to divert Americans' attention from the growing support for Republicans. Bess also reminded that Trump at one time expelled Epstein from his Mar-a-Lago club because he was a "creep".
Recall that as early as February, former Attorney General Pam Bondi, speaking before the same committee, emphasised the lack of evidence that Trump committed any crimes.
