Historic title for Ukrainian tennis

13-year-old Maria Kocherzhenko has written her name into the history of European junior tennis by winning the Tennis Europe U14 Finals held on the courts of Monte Carlo. She became the first representative of Ukraine to secure this title in the under-14 age category.

According to Suspilne, the Tennis Europe Junior Masters tournament has been held since 1996. Previously, tennis players from Ukraine had reached the finals but had not won. Thus, Maria Kocherzhenko became the first Ukrainian to triumph at this competition in its 30-year history.

Path to victory

During the competition, Maria played four matches: three in the group stage and one in the final. Despite one defeat at the group stage, the athlete successfully advanced to the decisive match.

In the final, the 13-year-old Ukrainian faced Italian tennis player Olivia Serena Conticello. The battle lasted two sets, and Maria won with a score of 7:6, 6:3.

Achievements of the 2026 season

Throughout 2026, Maria Kocherzhenko has won a number of important awards:

  • won the prestigious Super Category tournament in Milan;
  • reached the Wimbledon final in the U-14 category;
  • won a silver medal at the European Championship in singles;
  • received a bronze award at the European Championship in doubles.

In July of this year, the 13-year-old tennis player topped the Tennis Europe U-14 ranking for the first time. Before the start of the Finals tournament, she held the fourth place in the world classification of her age group.
