Transfer to house arrest
Former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak has left a place of detention. Instead of continuing to serve his sentence in prison, the politician has been transferred to house arrest. This decision became possible after the full payment of the court fine, which amounted to 50 million ringgit (approximately 12 million US dollars).
Funding through a party fund
The fine was settled by the political party UMNO. A special donation fund was launched in September to raise the necessary funds. After the payment was completed, the court issued an order changing the conditions of Najib Razak's detention.
Case history and sentence
Najib Razak has been behind bars since August 2022. He was charged with abuse of power, money laundering, and embezzlement of funds linked to the state investment fund 1MDB.
Initially, the court sentenced the former prime minister to 12 years in prison. However, the sentence was later reduced to six years.
