The United Nations is not directly involved in conducting a humanitarian mission in the temporarily occupied Oleshky in Kherson region. This was stated by the UN system coordinator in Ukraine, Matthias Schmale.

Requests to Moscow left unanswered

According to Schmale, the UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, Tom Fletcher, had previously approached the Russian delegation with a request to ensure safe passage for civilians and allow the delivery of humanitarian aid to Oleshky. However, the organisation has yet to receive any response from the Russian side.

Risk of new humanitarian disasters

The coordinator emphasised that the critical situation is observed not only in Oleshky but also in other settlements along the front line. He noted that at least one million people in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine require humanitarian assistance. Schmale warned that new cases of similar humanitarian disasters may become known in the near future.

Cooperation with the Ombudsman

Matthias Schmale also reported that the UN is maintaining dialogue with the Ombudsman of the Verkhovna Rada, Dmytro Lubinets. The organisation is ready to provide necessary support if such a need arises.
