Suspect's health condition

Journalists have obtained information on the current condition of 42-year-old Oleksiy Kovalskyi, who is suspected of shooting three police officers and three enlistment centre staff. The incident took place on 19 October in the Pechersk district of Kyiv. The arrested man is currently held in a prison block under escort at one of the capital's hospitals.

According to sources at the medical facility where the suspect is receiving treatment, he has been diagnosed with a closed traumatic brain injury, a concussion, and a broken nose.

Circumstances of arrest and court proceedings

The Pechersk court ruled to detain Kovalskyi for 60 days on 21 October, which coincided with his birthday. The hearing was not broadcast. According to sources, the suspect was brought to the hearing in a wheelchair because he was unable to move on his own.

Oleksiy Kovalskyi's lawyer, Serhiy Osyka, claims that his client was brutally beaten after his arrest. At the same time, the defence emphasises that Kovalskyi surrendered to law enforcement authorities himself after the shooting. Police sources confirm that the arrest was indeed forceful following the shooting.

Details of the incident

The shooting took place near the enlistment centre building in Pechersk. Around 20:00 on Monday, Kovalskyi was stopped by a mobilisation group together with police officers on Lesya Ukrainka Boulevard. The man was listed in the database as a draft evader, so the decision was made to take him to the enlistment centre.

During the process of getting into the vehicle, police did not conduct a pat-down search, as a result of which the man got into the car with a weapon. In the lobby of the enlistment centre premises, when officers attempted to search him, he pulled out a pistol and fired seven shots. The burst fire pattern indicates proficient handling of firearms. As a result of the incident, three police officers and three enlistment centre staff members sustained injuries of varying severity. The shooter was detained by other police officers who were on the scene.

Findings in the apartment and assessment of police actions

A full arsenal of weapons was found in Kovalskyi's apartment in the capital after the shooting and his arrest. It is known that the man was walking down the street wearing a bulletproof vest under his clothes, carrying a loaded SigSauer pistol, which is popular among Western special services. Confident handling of the weapon may indicate the presence of combat experience.

The Kyiv police are conducting an internal investigation into the injury of three police officers. Former head of the Donetsk Regional Police, Viacheslav Abrosykin, criticised the actions of law enforcement officers because they did not check for weapons immediately after the man's arrest. Abrosykin emphasised that a proper search of a detainee is the "ABC of personal safety".
