Plans to relocate one million people
In the event of a potential Russian invasion of the Baltic states, the evacuation of at least one million residents of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia to Poland is envisaged. This is reported by the Polish outlet RMF24.
The heads of the interior ministries of Lithuania and Poland discussed the details of these scenarios.
Ministers' statements
Lithuanian Interior Minister Martynas Katalinas confirmed the scale of the planned operations:
«У планах евакуації людей з Литви, Латвії та Естонії до Польщі у разі ескалації загрози з боку Росії включено щонайменше один мільйон людей» (The evacuation plans for people from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia to Poland in the event of an escalation of the threat from Russia include at least one million people).
His counterpart, the head of the Polish Ministry of the Interior and Administration, Marcin Kierwiński, added that Polish evacuation plans are currently being updated. This is linked to the conclusion on Saturday of large-scale civil defence exercises in Lithuania.
Logistics and preparation
Officials noted that the greatest burden of accepting refugees would fall on the Podlaskie Voivodeship. Meanwhile, all action scenarios still require clarification.
Marcin Kierwiński emphasised the need to be ready for various crisis situations:
«Ми повинні готуватися до різних кризових ситуацій. Литва природно лежить на шляху до Європейського Союзу, тому ми також повинні бути готові до цього» (We must prepare for various crisis situations. Lithuania naturally lies on the path to the European Union, so we must also be ready for this).
