Tactics for launching strike drones

Russia employs strike drones in small groups, launching them one after another, with the aim of overloading Ukraine's air defence system. This was stated by Yuriy Ignat, spokesperson for the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Route of enemy UAVs

According to Ignat, strike UAVs take off in small groups from Russian territory, move along the border with Belarus, and then attack targets in Ukraine. This tactic complicates the work of interceptor aircraft, which remain the primary means of countering jet-powered drones.

Conditions for aerial combat

The Air Force spokesperson emphasised that this tactic creates difficult conditions for aerial combat.

«F-16 доводиться долати значні відстані, щоб перехопити тут два “шахеди”, потім повертатися й перехоплювати там ще два “шахеди”. Тобто це складні умови для повітряного бою» (F-16s have to cover significant distances to intercept two "Shaheds" here, then return and intercept another two "Shaheds" there. In other words, these are difficult conditions for aerial combat), Ignat noted.
