The director of a private enterprise in Kyiv is suspected of organising the illegal burning of used car tyres. According to expert findings, soil contamination caused 3.9 million UAH in damages to the capital's local community. The company's head has been formally charged under two articles of the Criminal Code.

How the illegal disposal took place

Operatives from the Strategic Investigations Department of the National Police in Kyiv established that the enterprise's director organised the acceptance and storage of old tyres for subsequent disposal. According to the investigation, the tyres were burned in industrial furnaces located on the company's premises without the necessary permits for emitting pollutants into the atmosphere.

Such waste handling poses a serious threat to the environment and human health. When car tyres are burned without proper emission treatment, toxic and carcinogenic substances can be released into the air, negatively affecting the respiratory system and increasing the risk of developing diseases.

Soil contamination and expert findings

The violations were not limited to air emissions. Used tyres and disposal residues were stored directly on the land plot without observing proper conditions. This could have led to harmful substances entering the soil and degrading its natural properties.

Police, together with specialists from the State Environmental Inspectorate of the Capital District, inspected the enterprise's territory as part of the criminal proceedings. An engineering and environmental expert assessment determined the extent of the damage at 3.9 million UAH.

Charges and pre-trial investigation

Investigators from the Dnipro District Police Department have formally charged the enterprise's director under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:

  • Part 2 of Article 239 — contamination or degradation of land;
  • Part 2 of Article 364-1 — abuse of authority by an official of a private legal entity.

The pre-trial investigation is ongoing under the procedural supervision of the Dnipro District Prosecutor's Office of Kyiv. In accordance with Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is considered innocent of committing a crime until their guilt is proven in the legal manner and established by a guilty verdict of a court.
