New wave of social discontent in Italy

Italian media report the start of a new wave of mass protests. The largest number of participants is expected in Milan.

Demonstrators' demands and trade unions' position

The main demand of the protesters is a review of wage levels taking into account the rising cost of living. Trade union organisations are calling on the government to take measures to reduce prices of essential goods, utility services, and housing rent. The unions also demand a reduction in the VAT rate on essential goods.

Red alert in Milan

A red alert regarding public order has been introduced in Milan. Estimates suggest that around 10,000 people will take to the streets. Among the demonstrators are representatives of the private and public sectors, as well as students.

The march route runs from the Polytechnic University to the city centre. In addition, participants are calling for the blockade of the ring road leading to Padua, although this route has not been agreed with the police.

Protests in other cities

In addition to Milan, protest actions are planned on 30 October in Rome, Bologna, Turin, and other Italian cities.
