Misinterpretation of Cloudflare data
Russian opposition figure Leonid Volkov, an ally of Alexei Navalny, publicly denied widespread reports that activity by pro-Kremlin bots had decreased following strikes on the data centres of the company Yandex. According to him, such conclusions are based on a misunderstanding of statistics from the Cloudflare service.
Volkov emphasised that the recorded decrease in traffic concerned, among other things, search bots that automatically index websites, rather than accounts involved in spreading pro-Russian comments.
How the false version emerged
According to Volkov, a drop in traffic from Yandex subnets was indeed recorded after the strikes on the data centres. However, in his opinion, journalists focused on the term "bots", ignoring important clarifications regarding their type and functional purpose.
«І народилася замітка про те, що після ударів по дата-центрах "Яндекса" знизилася активність російських ботів» (And a note was born about how the activity of Russian bots decreased after the strikes on Yandex data centres), Volkov wrote.
Fake chart and politicians' reaction
A chart with German captions appeared on social media, allegedly demonstrating a sharp drop in the activity of Russian bots. Volkov classified this material as fake, drawing attention to a chronological inconsistency: the chart was published on 11 October, yet it contained data up to 15 October.
Later, this same chart was shared by a Polish Member of the European Parliament. He claimed that strikes on Yandex infrastructure led to a reduction in the number of comments supporting the German party AfD. After this, claims began to appear online that, along with Russian data centres, millions of supporters of AfD, the MAGA movement, and French right-wingers had "disappeared".
Criticism of lack of fact-checking
Leonid Volkov considers such conclusions unfounded. He also noted that the authors of these claims could not explain the mechanism linking Yandex servers to networks of political commentators in Western social media.
«Нуль фактчекінгу. Нуль запитань. Нескінченний хайп» (Zero fact-checking. Zero questions. Endless hype), Volkov concluded.
