Netherlands launch investigation into DeepSeek data collection

The Netherlands has launched an investigation into the transfer of personal data to China over the chatbot DeepSeek.

The Dutch Data Protection Authority (AP) has initiated a large-scale investigation into the transfer of personal information outside the European Union, with particular focus on the Chinese chatbot DeepSeek.

AP head Aled Wolfsen stated that the technology raises serious concerns regarding the protection of user data. According to him, DeepSeek’s privacy policy requires careful examination, as there are risks of unauthorised access and misuse of information.

Under European regulations, the transfer of EU citizens’ data to third countries is only possible in strict compliance with security rules. However, it is not yet clear whether DeepSeek meets these requirements. The authority intends to examine the information processing mechanism in detail and verify how reliably users can control their data.

Particular concern is raised by the fact that information transmitted to the application is stored on servers in China, which theoretically could give local authorities access to users’ personal data. Experts have already warned that information entered into DeepSeek is potentially subject to monitoring and analysis by Chinese entities.

In this regard, the Dutch regulator urges citizens to exercise caution when using this chatbot and advises them to be careful when sharing confidential information.
