Democratic members of the US House Judiciary Committee have called for the appointment of a special prosecutor. The aim of this step is to investigate possible links between incumbent President Donald Trump and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. According to the politicians, five women directly identify Trump as the perpetrator of sexual assault against them.
The Hill reported on the investigation details, citing a 53-page report released on Monday, 26 October. The document states that of the 11 women who associate the current head of state with Epstein's criminal activities, five claim to have been victims of rape or other sexual assault by Trump. According to the accusers, these incidents took place in the company of the controversial financier or shortly after meeting him, long before the start of his political career.
The committee suspects that Attorney General Todd Blanche is concealing additional evidence that directly points to the president's involvement in these crimes. The members of Congress state that Pam Bondi, who previously held the position of Attorney General, and the current head of the department, Todd Blanche, ran the Department of Justice like a private law firm instead of ensuring justice.
“Determined to protect the president at all costs, the DOJ is now managing the cover-up of Epstein's operation of human trafficking for sexual exploitation. Blanche has gone from Trump's personal lawyer to his personal attorney general,” said the members of the House of Representatives.
The members of Congress emphasise that the special prosecutor must investigate not only Trump's role but also the actions of all of Epstein's co-conspirators to hold these individuals accountable.
Jamie Raskin, a Democrat from Maryland and member of the Judiciary Committee, reminded that Trump had previously acknowledged knowing Epstein, saying: “як і всі в Палм-Біч” (like everyone in Palm Beach). At the same time, Raskin disputed this notion, stating: “Це не зовсім так. Докази, що стосуються 11 жінок, розповідають зовсім іншу й набагато більш викривальну історію про їхні стосунки та злочини щодо молодих жінок і дівчат” (That is not quite right. The evidence concerning the 11 women tells a completely different and much more damning story about their relationships and crimes against young women and girls).
In addition, Raskin and his colleagues drew attention to the frequency of Trump's name being mentioned in the so-called Epstein files, especially after FBI Director Kash Patel assured that there were “less than a thousand” of them.
White House spokesperson Lauren Bess told The Hill that none of the allegations cited in the report are true. According to her, the document is merely a “desperate attempt by crazy Democrats to distract Americans from the growing Republican momentum driven by President Trump's historic achievements”.
“The president kicked Jeffrey Epstein out of his club at Mar-a-Lago because he was a scumbag, and he was fully exonerated of anything related to Epstein,” Bess emphasised.
