The Government of Moldova is considering the possibility of introducing a visa regime for citizens of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus. This step could become part of the gradual alignment of the country's migration policy with the requirements of the European Union.
Position of the country's leadership
Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan emphasised that Chisinau is obliged to align its visa rules with European norms if this is a necessary condition for joining the EU.
«Якщо норми ЄС цього вимагають, вважаю, що ми повинні ухвалювати рішення, які дозволять нам просуватися в процесі євроінтеграції» (If EU norms require it, I believe we must make decisions that will allow us to move forward in the process of European integration), Tofan stressed.
European Commission requirements
According to data from the European Commission, Moldova needs to align its visa policy regarding citizens of 11 states, including Russia and Belarus. At present, citizens of these countries have the right to enter Moldovan territory without visas.
The Prime Minister did not specify concrete deadlines for the possible introduction of new restrictions. It is worth noting that China is not included in the list of states regarding which Moldova is obliged to align its visa regime within the framework of these requirements.
