The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China officially confirmed that it is holding negotiations with the United States and Russia regarding the organisation of a trilateral meeting. This was announced by the department's spokesperson, according to Bloomberg.
Possible format and timing
According to the representative of the MFA of the PRC, this concerns a potential meeting between US President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Previously, both Trump and Putin had publicly stated their interest in holding such contacts.
According to the publication, such a meeting could take place within two weeks. The APEC summit, to be held in the Chinese city of Shenzhen, is named as a possible venue.
Geopolitical implications
Bloomberg notes that the implementation of such a format would be a significant step for Russia. It would allow Moscow to emerge from the international isolation in which it found itself following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
In addition, such a trilateral platform would give Xi Jinping the opportunity to act as a mediator, facilitating the convergence of positions between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.
