Poland has completed the procurement of four American Barbara aerostats designed for monitoring airspace. These systems are capable of detecting low-flying targets, including cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, at a distance of several hundred kilometres.

Delivery delay and financial aspects of the deal

The expected delivery date for the equipment has been postponed to the second quarter of 2027, which is several months later than the initial schedule. According to the Armaments Agency, the delay is related to specificities of the competitive procedure and the filing of an appeal by one of the competitors.

Thanks to the conducted competition, the cost of the order was reduced by approximately one billion zloty. The initial estimate of the contract was $1.2 billion. The American company TCOM was declared the winner of the competitive procedure.

Preparation for combat use

Receiving the equipment is not the final stage of implementing the system. After the physical delivery of the equipment, Polish military personnel will have to carry out a number of important tasks: prepare the necessary infrastructure, train the personnel, and integrate the new aerostats into the overall management system. Therefore, full combat readiness of the complexes will not be achieved immediately after their delivery.
