Rationale for the decision on temporary easing of restrictions

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told journalists that President Donald Trump’s decision to temporarily reduce sanctions pressure on Russia is aimed at stabilising the global energy market. According to Rubio, Washington is trying to understand the economic consequences of the current restrictions and simultaneously expects that a portion of Russian diesel fuel will be directed to the United States.

Rubio noted that the head of state considers it appropriate to allow additional energy supplies to the global market for a limited period to influence prices. “I think the president’s decision to allow additional energy supplies to the world market for a short period is very wise. This not only benefits us – although, of course, it helps the United States – but is also an important factor given the high prices of diesel fuel worldwide,” the Secretary of State emphasised.

Impact on global logistics and prices

The official explained that Russian diesel would reach the international market regardless of Washington’s position. In Rubio’s view, the key question is what share of these volumes will become available specifically for the US.

The Secretary of State linked the rise in energy prices to a number of factors. Among them, he cited the situation around Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, and strikes on energy infrastructure during the Russian-Ukrainian war.

60 days to assess the consequences

Rubio added that the Trump administration needs time to analyse the impact of sanctions and tariffs on the US economy and other countries. According to him, the president plans to use a 60-day period for this.
