In the Saltivka district of Kharkiv, law enforcement officers detained a 50-year-old resident suspected of committing a violent attack on servicemen of the Territorial Centre for Recruitment and Social Support. The incident occurred on 25 June during measures to notify the population as part of the mobilisation.
According to the investigation, a conflict arose between the servicemen and an unknown man, which escalated into a physical altercation. The attacker used a cold weapon, injuring two TCC representatives.
One of the victims, a 46-year-old man, sustained a penetrating wound to the chest in the area of the heart. The other serviceman suffered superficial cuts to his head and torso. Both victims were hospitalised urgently, but the life of the first could not be saved.
After committing the crime, the suspect left the scene. To locate him, the police organised a complex of operational-search measures. Operatives from the Kharkiv District Police Department No. 2, the Criminal Investigation Department, and the Criminal Analysis Department checked approximately 5,000 people who could have been witnesses to the incident or had a connection to it. Hundreds of hours of video surveillance footage were also reviewed.
The key detail in identifying the individual was the glasses worn by the attacker. Law enforcement officers checked places selling glasses and ophthalmology clinics, which allowed them to obtain information about the possible perpetrator.
It turned out that after the murder, the man changed his place of residence and switched off his mobile phone. His mother moved with him, and they did not inform acquaintances or relatives of their new address. Operatives managed to track the places where the suspect's mother withdrew cash through ATMs, which helped establish their new location.
During an authorised search, law enforcement officers detained the 50-year-old man. He confessed to inflicting knife wounds on the TCC and SP servicemen.
Investigators, under the procedural supervision of the Saltivka District Prosecutor's Office, notified the defendant of suspicion under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:
These articles provide for punishment in the form of imprisonment for a term of 10 to 15 years or life imprisonment.
The suspect was detained under Articles 208 and 615 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. The court chose a preventive measure in the form of detention. The final decision on guilt must be made by the court; until the guilty verdict enters into legal force, the presumption of innocence applies.
