Overall losses from mine threats

The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine has provided updated data on the consequences of the use of mines and other explosive hazardous objects by Russian occupiers. Since the start of the full-scale invasion, 1,256 cases related to mines and explosives have been verified.

In total, 1,757 people were affected by such incidents. Of these, 510 people were killed and 1,247 were injured.

Categories of victims

Statistics indicate that people from various age groups and professions have been killed or injured by mines. The circle of victims includes pensioners, farmers, drivers, schoolchildren, critical infrastructure workers, unemployed individuals, as well as specialists involved in the demining process.

Situation with children

The situation regarding the child population causes particular concern. According to ministry data, since the start of the full-scale war, 26 children have died as a result of stepping on mines: 25 boys and one girl.

A further 145 minors were injured: 125 boys and 20 girls.

Mechanism for providing assistance and data collection

During a specialised workshop, a representative of the Ministry of Defence presented a model for collecting and analysing information on victims of explosive hazardous objects. The foundation of this system is an interactive map that records mine incidents and explosive remnants of war. The administration and population of the database are handled by the secretariat of the National Mine Action Agency.

Experts also discussed the procedure for referring victims to organisations capable of providing the necessary support. With the written consent of the victim, their personal data from the National Agency's database can be transferred to a verified organisation of the relevant profile.

Results of the system's work

This mechanism is already functioning: since 2023, thanks to referrals, 185 victims have received assistance. With the support of humanitarian organisations, they were provided with medical treatment, rehabilitation, transport organisation, distance learning, and employment services.

The total estimated cost of the assistance provided is almost 3.4 million hryvnia.

In addition, international organisations have the opportunity to cover the costs of treatment and rehabilitation, as well as to provide means for distance learning and work for individuals who have sustained mine and explosive injuries.

Systematic collection and analysis of information on mine casualty cases is carried out by the Main Directorate for Mine Action, Civil Protection and Environmental Safety.
