Book release suspended
German publisher Molino has decided to suspend the publication of the novel "Who I Am When You See Me". This step was taken at the request of the author, Yuna Liebrecht, after the work sparked a wave of outrage among critics. The main reason was the risk of romanticising the war and the Russian occupation of Ukrainian territories.
Public and expert reaction
As reported by the dpa agency, the main stream of criticism was directed at how the experience of Ukrainians is depicted in the book. Particular concern was raised by the portrait of a Russian soldier who acts as a saviour and romantic partner for a civilian Ukrainian woman in occupied territory. According to observers, such a plot risks romanticising military occupation, violence, and the suffering of the civilian population.
Explanation of the publisher's and author's position
Molino publisher head Matthias Slunicek emphasised that the author's intention was to demonstrate the strength of human feelings that prevail over external circumstances.
«Авторський задум полягав у тому, що зустрічаються двоє людей і людські стосунки виявляються сильнішими за зовнішні обставини. Насправді це роман, який утверджує людяність і мир та виступає проти війни» (The author's intention was that two people meet and human relationships turn out to be stronger than external circumstances. In fact, this is a novel that affirms humanity and peace and stands against war), he stated.
Yuna Liebrecht, in turn, apologised to everyone who felt offended or hurt by the content of the book. The author stressed that she had no intention of offending anyone or romanticising the war.
Plot context
The novel's action unfolds after the capture of Kherson by Russian forces. Ukrainian civilian resident Lusia loses almost everything that defined her life. After an explosion, she is saved by a masked Russian soldier, which becomes the beginning of a secret romance between them. However, as the plot develops, the heroine comes to understand that love is unable to annul the fact of violence or deprive her of her sense of guilt.
The release of the edition was scheduled for 1 November, but following the publisher's decision, publication was suspended.
