The head of the US state, Donald Trump, expressed dissatisfaction with initiatives aimed at increasing pressure on Moscow through economic restrictions. The politician called supporters of such a strategy "stupid people," claiming that these actions would have prevented the release of American Stephen Hubbard from a Russian prison.

Reaction to calls for sanctions

During a public appearance, Trump noted that in Russia, proposals to introduce new sanctions are met with irony. "The Russians are laughing at these sanctions," the US president emphasised, commenting on Moscow's reaction to potential restrictive measures.

To illustrate his point, the US leader mentioned the situation with Hubbard. He posed a rhetorical question to the audience: how would it look if he simultaneously asked Vladimir Putin to release an American citizen and imposed sanctions on the Russian Federation. "Can you imagine?", Trump addressed those present.

Circumstances of Hubbard's detention and release

The 74-year-old pensioner, who previously worked as a teacher in Michigan state, fell into the hands of Russian military forces on Ukrainian territory in April 2022. Russian authorities sentenced him allegedly for participating in hostilities on the side of Ukraine in the status of a mercenary. Meanwhile, in the US, his status was recognised as unlawful detention.

Stephen Hubbard was released on 21 October. This occurred during a visit by Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff to Saint Petersburg. The US president stated that he personally asked Putin to release the American during a phone call and emphasised that no formal prisoner exchange took place. The Kremlin stated that the decision to grant release was made for humanitarian reasons.
